No one warned her hot flashes could lead to death…

Forced to leave her celebrated career as an international war correspondent after an injury, Kate Tessler now dabbles in detective work in her Arizona hometown along with her sister, Jen. When Jen's old college friend asks them to investigate suspicious activity at a motel he inherited, it sounds like a free vacation with a little surveillance thrown in.

But when Kate's hot flashes wake her in the middle of the night, she wanders outside to cool off and stumbles into a crime scene.

Kate and Jen can’t trust anyone at the motel or the local police force they suspect of corruption. The lies pile up, the villains multiply, and the motel is hiding more secrets than they ever imagined. Good thing they have their eclectic senior sidekicks to share the undercover work.

In the Accidental Detective humorous mystery series, a witty journalist solves mysteries in Arizona and tackles the challenges of turning fifty.

Readers say: “A page turning read... I have enjoyed this series so much.”

“What’s great about this series is the easy, affectionate relationship between the amateur investigators, ranging from very young to senior people. I love that everyone has something to do and to contribute to the general investigation goals. The humor and teasing are also stupendous.”

“This book was really entertaining. This is such a fun series to read. I like the characters as they are all so quirky, yet genuine... I highly recommend this book and the whole series. Another 5 star book by Kris Bock!”

Quick Peek:

Something rustled in the bushes. I heard footsteps—or was that the pounding of my heart? I turned and ran for my room, my shoes smacking the pavement. Silence wouldn’t save me. If someone was watching from the shadows, they already knew I was there. In any case, I couldn’t stop myself from running as fast as my legs would let me, begging the stiff muscles in my bad leg to keep up and not send me sprawling.

My key card. Where was it? My hands were empty. I leaned my cane next to the door so I could pat my hips with the hand that wasn’t damp and sticky. My sleep shorts didn’t have pockets. Had I dropped it? I didn’t want to go back there. I didn’t want anyone else to find the key, either. A shudder racked my body at the thought.

I swung around and scanned the area. Spots danced before my eyes. I sucked in a breath. A second breath. The spots faded.

The surface of the pool sparkled from the underwater lights. Dim lights shone over most of the doors. They cast overlapping shadows, so the tables and chairs outside each room became a jumble of lines. The bushes sat like hunched figures. The patio under the awning had no lights, plunging the gruesome sight there into darkness. The entrance to the stairwell was a black pit. Shadows everywhere. So many shadows.

In college, Cheyenne and Nash were inseparable. Then she followed her dream, heading to Asia to work on big cat conservation. Nash stayed behind, protecting his secret: a phobia of all cats.

Fifteen years later, Cheyenne comes home. Can Nash convince her to stay and give him another chance?

Excerpt:

Cheyenne stopped in front of the Furrever Friends Cat CafĂ© and gazed through the windows. A man crouched on the floor, holding a long stick with a string on the end. He waved the stick, and a cat leapt for the bundle of feathers on the other end of the string. The cat had to be adorable – after all, cats were – but she couldn’t look away from the man. His crouched position didn’t hide his long legs and broad shoulders. The curve of his cheek, the angle of his jaw, the dark hair falling over his forehead – they were more familiar than her own face.

But it couldn’t be Nash. Not here. He hated cats, always had, wouldn’t go near them. That had destroyed their relationship all those years ago.

Cheyenne stared, blinked, and stared some more. The sight didn’t change. The clean cafĂ© windows and bright lights inside left no doubt. He might have filled out a little, gained a touch of grey in his dark hair, but it couldn’t be anyone else.

Her ex-boyfriend was in a cat cafĂ©. Playing with a cat. It didn’t make sense.

The Furrever Friends Sweet Romance series features the workers and customers at a small-town cat café, and the adorable cats and kittens looking for their forever homes. Each book is a complete story with a happy ending for one couple (and maybe more than one rescued cat).

Chai Tea Shortbread Cookies

If using loose-leaf tea, grind the tea into a rough powder first. If using tea bags, cut open the tea bags (4-6) and measure. Tea bags usually have a more powdered mix, so you don't have to grind it. Mix the ingredients in a food processor for ease. You can also press the dough into a shortbread pan and bake for about 30 minutes

2 cups all-purpose flour
2/3 cup sugar
2 tablespoons chai tea (ground fine)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, room temperature
2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

Blend the flour, sugar, chai, and salt.

Mix in the butter and vanilla. Press the mixture into a ball of dough.

Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/3-inch thick. Use a cookie cutter and place cookies 2 inches apart on baking sheets lined with parchment paper or silicone baking sheets. Bake until the edges are golden, 8-12 minutes depending on size. Let cool on sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks and cool to room temperature.

You can also get 22 of the recipes mentioned in the novella and in books 1, 2, and 3 with newsletter signup.
