Chapter 1 Preview: Something Shady at Sunshine Haven

My childhood home had faded in the harsh Arizona sun and now showed its age—rather like me. I’d never dreamed of living here again after thirty years of traveling the world. But I needed to rest and heal, and where better to do that than in my parents’ house? In a few weeks—I promised myself weeks, not months, and definitely not years—I would be well enough to return to journalism. “How’s Mom?” I asked.

“Good,” Dad said. “Well, you know. She’s settled in. She can’t wait to see you.”

I didn’t ask if she’d remember me. I hadn’t noticed signs of Alzheimer’s on my last visit, but that had been a year ago.

“Hey, a friend of yours runs the care home. She gave me a message for you. Said it was urgent.” Dad shuffled through the mail on the little table by the door.

I couldn’t think of any friends in Arizona. I hadn’t had any here since my childhood. My friends were scattered around the world, wherever news was happening.

Dad handed me an envelope. I propped my cane against the table so I had two hands to tear open the envelope. The handwritten message inside was brief:

Kitty—Please come see me ASAP. I need your help.

—Heather Garcia

“She sounded . . .” Dad hesitated. “She asked about your journalism and begged me to bring you in as soon as possible.”

A #Giveaway for Ryan’s Temptation, #romanticSuspense by Daulton: After Chanel witnesses a murder, she and her sexy neighbor flee the city with the killer in hot pursuit. #Romance #ContemporaryRomance

Ryan’s Temptation

Series: Arresting Onyx (book 2.5)
Release Date: August 9, 2022
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Length: 45k
Heat Rating: 4 Flames

Wrong place, wrong time. Now she’s running for her life.

Beautician Chanel Leroc can wield a pair of scissors like nobody’s business. After she witnesses a murder and lands on a serial killer’s hit list, she has to figure out how to protect herself—and fast. The killer tracks her down, but her sexy new neighbor, Dr. Ryan Naylor, drives the brute off.

The police dump the pair in a witness protection program, which doesn’t last long. Either the killer has a connection to the police, or he’s far more intelligent than they realize. All Chanel wants to do is get back to her safe life and get to know her neighbor better. Instead, she and Ryan hit the road and try to survive on their own.

How will they stay alive and keep their blooming romance intact with the killer hot on their trail?

Excerpt:

She blew a lock of her hair away from her face. “If your mom shows up, I’m screwed. I have no makeup, and the clothes I wore yesterday need a date with the washing machine. First impressions are everything with a man’s mother. Do you know you’re the first guy to see me barefaced since Jonas?”

Who was Jonas? He clamped his jaw on the question. “Mom will understand. She likes stubborn women who refuse to take my bull. Besides, you look great without all that junk on your face.” He stiffened as she lifted her manicured eyebrow. “But I’m not opposed to it either. Do what makes you feel comfortable.”

She chuckled softly. “Good save.”

He blew out a pent-up sigh. Whew! No doghouse for him. “Who’s Jonas?” Okay, so he asked. At least he didn’t growl it.

“My ex-boyfriend.” She traced the line of Ryan’s whiskered jaw. “We were living together and contemplating marriage when he got a great job offer out-of-state. I didn’t want to move, so he left and took our Corgi with him. I miss Rocky like crazy. Hell, I miss the dog more than I do Jonas.” She fluffed Ryan’s shirt. “I loved him, but it wasn’t that awe-inspiring, ballad-type romance I read about in my books. Anyway, I couldn’t afford the rent on our house, so I moved. I made the right decision to not leave Denver, but I wouldn’t be in this mess if I had.”

They also wouldn’t have met. His gut fisted. “How long were you with him?”

“About three years.”

He tunneled his hand through his mussed hair. “You’re just coming out of a long-term relationship. We should slow down.”

“How long have you been divorced?”

“Two years, but my marriage was over long before that.”

“I’m over Jonas, so I don’t need to take baby steps.” She rested her hands on his chest.

“Okay. If you’re sure?”

She claimed his lips, the passion in her kiss silencing his doubts.

Meet the Accidental Detective in the humorous #mystery series readers praise for great characters, a twisty plot, and fun! #CozyMystery #BookBuzz

Meet the Accidental Detective

[Originally published on the Rebecca M. Douglass Author blog during the Great Escapes book tour. See her review.]

Hello from Arizona. I'm Kate Tessler. I've been a journalist for my whole adult life – almost 30 years - specializing in covering wars and natural disasters. I thought I'd seen it all, and most of it half a dozen times. I'm uncomfortable in an interview if the subject doesn't have guards armed with AK-47 assault rifles. It's a dangerous life, no matter how much you start to take it for granted.

Then one day I was too close to a bomb when it exploded.

Don't worry, I'm not a ghost – merely a 49-year-old woman who now walks with a cane. I never felt old before, but I sure am noticing the difference as I face 50. My body doesn't recover like it used to. I can't tell if the brain fog is from the painkillers, PTSD, or menopause. When people see my silver hair and cane, their gazes slide on by.

I'm not even sure if it's a blessing or a curse that the accident brought me back home to Arizona. It’s weird sleeping in my childhood room and trying to figure out how to be roommates with my father. My mother was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's, and it’s hard seeing her like that. Dad is still pretty sharp, but he's showing his age too. Meanwhile, my sister Jen holds a grudge. For what? She’s not saying, and I don’t have the energy to figure it out.

I promised myself I’d only be home for a few months to heal. Then I’d head back to the trenches. I assumed those months would be boring. What excitement could the Phoenix Metropolitan Area offer compared to Middle Eastern war zones?

But I’m no longer a teenager known as Kitty. Now I’m a famous journalist, or at least one who is somewhat well-known in my hometown. People are coming to me when they have problems that need investigation and they don't want to go to the police.

Like Heather, an old high school acquaintance who now runs a nursing home. She’s afraid two recent patient deaths might not have been natural. She wants to know if someone is killing her patients.

Why is that my problem? I'll tell you why: because my mother lives in that nursing home now. She may be fading from the woman I knew, but I'm not ready to lose her.

So it's time to shake off the brain fog, pick up the cane, and get back to investigating. This time, instead of warlords and military commanders, I'm facing down suburban housewives and trying to get information from memory care parents. Instead of a research assistant, I have a young computer genius who looks like a cheerleader and thinks like Bill Gates with better morals. Instead of bodyguards, I have my father with his men's coffee group, the Coffee Shop Irregulars.

I've lived through wars, "military operations," a kidnapping, three major earthquakes, and two hurricanes. Turns out that was just the warmup.

War correspondent Kate Tessler has followed the most dangerous news stories around the world. But can she survive going home?

Injured in a bombing, Kate returns to her hometown in Arizona to recover. For the first time in her life, she's starting to feel her age (49), even though she's living like a teenager again: staying with her father, trying to understand why her sister resents her so much, and running into people who still think of her as Kitty.

Seeing her mother in an Alzheimer's unit is the hardest part – until an old friend asks her to investigate suspicious deaths at that nursing home. Is a self-appointed "Angel of Mercy" killing patients to end their suffering? Are family members hastening their inheritance? Is an employee extorting money and removing the witnesses? Kate uses her journalism skills to track clues, but the puzzle pieces simply won't fit.

If Kate can't uncover the truth, her mother could be next on the killer's list.

Something Deadly on Desert Drive

In the humorous Accidental Detective series, a witty journalist solves mysteries in Arizona and tackles the challenges of turning fifty. Now Kate and her quirky gang of sidekicks have new problems to solve. Kate's father and his coffee group are worried. Their friend Larry married a younger woman who now claims he has dementia. They think she's lying. Before they can dig out the truth, a murder raises the stakes, and Kate's father is among the suspects. To save him and Larry, Kate must reveal the real murderer – but her investigation could put all their lives at risk.
