Pamper Yourself on Singles’ Day – November 11 is #singlesday #freebie

Closeup from The Dead Man's Treasure cover
Did you know that November 11 is Singles’ Day? I didn't until a few days ago, but apparently this is a thing – a growing thing. Forbes says “U.S. Retailers Should Embrace Singles' Day Over Black Friday.”

Singles’ Day is huge in China, and some US retailers have joined in. It's not as famous or busy in the US as Black Friday, but Singles’ Day is now considered the kickoff of the holiday buying season in America.

Of course the retailers are trying to make it all about shopping. But in China, Guanggun Jie is a festival where young people celebrate their single status. It's held on 11/11 because of all the number 1s. Per Wikipedia (not always the most reliable source, but the one that had the most information easily found), the celebration began in 1993 and spread through universities. Then some of those university students took the concept into larger society.

Though ostensibly a celebration of being single, the holiday is really about love. In Chinese you'll find everything from blind date parties to increase in weddings on that day.

So how to celebrate? Whether you're single or not, by choice or by circumstance, why not take a little time to pamper yourself? That might mean a long hike or a long bath, a glass of wine or a decadent dessert, snuggling with your sweetie or playing with the kids. But my wish for you on Singles’ Day is that you have some time to settle down with a good book. Every day is a great day for a good book!
