#AuthorLove exchange Unholy Alliance – steamy romantic #thriller from #TirgearrPublishing @RowlandKathleen

Unholy Alliance by Kathleen Rowland (2nd book in the Irish American Donahue Cousins series)

A decade ago, Tori Rourke, and her cousin, Vivienne, ran from the Irish mob after witnessing a brutal murder. Tori was framed by the mob, and while she served time in prison, she worried that the killer, Seamus McGinn, had kidnapped her missing cousin.

Attorney Grady D. Fletcher, defender of the wrongly condemned, appeals Tori’s case and wins her release. Now, going by Victoria Morningstar, she runs a food truck from a seedy waterfront neighborhood, hoping to find her cousin’s kidnapper.

When Grady agrees to defend a new client, Samuel Peterson, who’s been accused of beating to death the wife of a noted professor, the evidence mounts. The professor is missing, as well as his laptop that contains data dangerous to national security.

And Seamus McGinn is back, and rumors of a massive annihilation is about to begin. As they race to assist the FBI, the bonds between Grady and Tori are about to be tested. It becomes clear Grady and Tori are falling fast for each other, but what to do about it is a different story. He’s a divorced dad who wants more time with his kid. She brings danger to his front door.

Grady has questions of his own; Is Vivienne at the center of the mob’s operation? How much will it cost Tori before she learns the truth? All Grady knows is the biggest danger is the one standing right behind you.

Excerpt:

“Don’t let the anxiety of freedom consume you.”  Attorney Grady Donahue Fletcher clenched his teeth and rehearsed what he’d say to his client, Victoria Morningstar. He’d won her appeal and drove to pick her up at Gladstone Penitentiary. “At least you won’t be placed in solitary.” That was worse.

Six months earlier Grady had phoned a reporter at the Los Angeles Globe. "Drew Barker. Grady Fletcher here.”

“Ah, the lawyer. Calling about a tip?”

“I am. Here's something you can investigate. Tori Morningstar, did she murder Irene Brennan?"

"I wrote that story many years back," the journalist had said. “I assume you have new discoveries.”

"Fraud, illegal testimony. Do you want the story first?" A second passed. "Otherwise, I'll call the Orange County Guardian."

"Okay, okay. We want it."

Three days later Grady had a hand in writing the first article in Drew Barker’s column. "The public labeled Tori Morningstar as an undesirable. Not black and poor, but disfavored, accused, incarcerated, and wrongly condemned. Her cellphone has been recovered. Her call to 911 identified her voice and substantiated screams of the victim in the background. Could she have beaten someone while speaking to dispatch at the same time?"

The reporter had written the second article. "People who get their ideas about criminal lawyers from TV probably would be disappointed in Grady Fletcher. He lacks flash but stands up straight, his posture neither ramrod nor slouched. He doesn't smoke, doesn't wear thousand dollar suits. His voice is soft and low, one of his assets. He speaks truth with a voice inviting confidences."

As nice as that was, Grady’s stomach cramped over pressure and strain from Drew Barker’s final article with the headline, Tori Morningstar, Released Today. Picked up by the online service, Newser, KTLA, and CBS Los Angeles, they planned to broadcast his arrival to escort his client from Gladstone.

Tori’s decade-long prison sentence ended today but with a sobering fear over tomorrow.

When was a July morning this hot? Grady balanced her release papers on his lap as he rolled up one sleeve then the other while gripping the damp steering wheel. Sweat blossomed on his throbbing forehead, wrapped like a python’s grip. He adjusted the dial for the AC and embraced the challenge of helping another client get back on track. Embrace and conquer. Or at least sound like it.

Short Interview with Kathleen Rowland

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
True colors, virtue and character, are revealed in crisis. In their own ways, heroine Tori and hero Grady undergo personal drama but exhibit calm and rationality when their loves are rocked by a murderer. She stops beating herself up for her mob family’s mistakes. He becomes more empathetic.

How do you come up with your characters?
Protagonists need four solid characteristics and one flaw. Antagonists need one good quality. Otherwise characters would be lifeless. After determining qualities (which involves their horoscopes) how they react is set in stone.

Do you have any writing rituals that you do while writing?
Prior to writing a book, I write the intended blurb for the book, followed by a synopsis. I place chapter headings in Scrivener. This avoids a saggy middle and forces forward writing with goal, motivation, and conflict. Often another twist takes over, but I don’t stray far from the intended plot points. I write tight and steamy romantic suspense.

Anything else you’d like to share with us?
I write every day but set aside time in mid-morning to swim laps. After lunch I do floor stretches and gardening. Although Im active on social media, I get out face-to-face. Conversation is stimulating at my weekly local book club. At the Orange County Chapter of Romance Writers of America. I will chair The Orange Rose Contest for unpublished writers. I teach a writing class entitled: Spin reverberating scenes that resonate with your readers.

Book Buyers Best finalist Kathleen Rowland is devoted to giving her readers fast-paced, high-stakes suspense with a sizzling love story sure to melt their hearts. Writing a romantic suspense Irish American series for Tirgearr Publishing, Deadly Alliance is followed by Unholy Alliance. Bittersweet Alliance is in the works. Keep an icy drink handy while reading these hot stories.

Kathleen used to write computer programs but now writes novels. She grew up in Iowa where she caught lightning bugs, ran barefoot, and raced her sailboat on Lake Okoboji. Now she wears flip-flops and sails with her husband, Gerry, on Newport Harbor but wishes there were lightning bugs in California.

Kathleen exists happily with her witty CPA husband, Gerry, in their 70’s poolside retreat in Southern California where she adores time spent with visiting grandchildren, dogs, one bunny, and noisy neighbors. While proud of their five children who’ve flown the coop, she appreciates the luxury of time to write. If you’d enjoy news, sign up for Kathleen’s newsletter.

Hiking the Grand Canyon with Dad – Happy Father's Day #fathers

This is my first Father's Day without my father. One of my favorite ways to remember him is hiking. We hiked a lot together in the last decade, whenever my husband and I visited my parents in Arizona. Dad also took my brother and me on our first trip down the Grand Canyon! Later my husband and I went with my father and his hiking group, hiking rim to rim. Last year, Mom, my brother, my husband and I returned to the Grand Canyon and scattered Dad's ashes. Most of these pictures are from the first Canyon hike my brother and I did with Dad.

 Ready to start the hike!

My brother and father on the trail.

 Dad leading the way.

Dad and me taking a break.

We made it to the bottom!
This is near Phantom Ranch where we stayed two nights.

We're wearing different clothes, so this must be on the hike back up.

And we made it back up again!

The view from near where we scattered Dad's ashes last autumn.*

[You can get permission to scatter ashes, with certain rules and restrictions.]

Finding Roanoak

Emme is the midwife for the Roanoak Colony. Circumstances threaten their survival, but Emme has met a European man calling himself Tighe in the forest where no European man should be.

Tighe has problems of his own. His people fled across the sea to escape mortal men and their iron weapons, but now they are dying out. Stealing children is not an option, but Tighe hopes if Emme and some of the other from the failing colony will agree to come live with his people they will interbreed. However his mother is opposed to bringing mortals into Faerie and threatens to close the border sealing the Fae in and sealing their doom. At the same time, he has lost Emme's trust and does not know how to regain it. His efforts to protect her with Fae magic have also cast a suspicion of witchcraft on her from the expedition.

Excerpt:

“I want you to teach me how to heal a broken bone.”

“I would teach you if I could, but I cannot.”

“Why? Because I’m a woman? I'm a midwife trained in healing. I'm a willing student.”

He stepped around the tree and leaned on it. “I cannot. You must be born to it.”

“I must be born a man, you mean.” Emme folded her arms.

“No.”

Emme waited. She wasn't sure why. None of the men in her life ever explained 'no.' For them, it was the end of the conversation. Why should this one be different? “What is your name?”

“Tighe.”

“Tighe? That is not a good English name.”

He laughed. The warm, rich sound of it trilled down her spine. “No, it is not.”

“Then where are you from? What are you doing here? There isn't supposed to be anyone living in these parts.” Emme smacked her hands against her skirts. The sound wasn't loud enough to be satisfying. “We are supposed to be the only English here. We have a contract from the Queen.”

“You didn't tell anyone about me, did you?”

His tone was wrong. In addition to the striking coloring, she now noticed the stranger was a little odd looking. His face was thin, regal even. And a little anxious. Something about the tight set of his eyes and the pressure along his lips. His accent was a bit odd too. Like none she’d ever heard. “No, why?”

He sighed, the first overt sign of his tension. “We don't need your people hunting us again.”

Tainted Rose

Maybelline Beasley enjoys her life in the Silver Leaf 55+ community until her neighbor is murdered. With all eyes point at her as the prime suspect, she struggles with her fear of cops and her attraction to Detective Billy Bob Cooter. Can he save her from the real murderer who’s looking for an escape goat? Or will her second change at love come to an end by a killer’s gun?

Excerpt:

“You have reached the 911 operator for Sitwell. What’s your emergency?” The calm voice appeared pleasant enough, but Maybelline wasn’t sure how long it would stay that way.

“I believe my neighbor is in trouble. She likes to hang out on top of her roof and meditate.” An unmovable lump formed in her throat. Swallowing her emotions, she started again. “But, she’s, uh, not moving and lying slightly off kilter as if something is wrong.”

“Could she have fallen asleep?” The operator suggested.

“No, I tried...” She stopped mid-sentence as she realized the woman might have a point. After all, Rose could be a little deaf. To test the theory, Maybelline searched for a way to make noise. “Wait, a second.”

She leaned into the car, set her hand in the middle of the steering wheel, and laid on her horn. The blast echoed around her, and she turned to glance up at her neighbor.

Rose didn’t move.

The certainty of an adverse outcome resonated through Maybelline’s body. The heaviness of grief robbed her of strength. She sagged against the car’s doorframe for support and lifted her cellphone back to her ear.

“Madam, madam, you don’t need to blow the horn. That might frighten her, and she could fall off the roof.” The operator sounded irritated by the interruption.

“But how else could I tell if she was asleep?” Maybelline didn’t understand the woman’s problem.

“Why don’t I just send someone out to check on your friend?”

“That would be helpful, thanks.” Maybelline lowered the phone knowing the 911 operator would want to keep her on the line, but she had no intentions of doing any such thing. She had gone through the whole rigmarole the last time and had no plans to do it again.

“Miss, I need...”

Maybelline hit the disconnect button and stuffed her cell in the pocket of her jeans.

Showing some #AuthorLove for a Hot Paranormal #Romance, Alpha Lover, by Brenda Sparks

Alpha Lover, by Brenda Sparks

Starved for blood, vampire Nicholai Peterhof is greatly relieved when two tourists, in Russia for the Christmas holiday, decide to grace his restaurant, but one sip from the pretty brunette and his world is forever turned upside down. Juliette Staint-John is everything he could have asked for in a heartmate; pretty, smart, built with curves in all the right places…and totally unavailable.

Juliette doesn’t want anything to do with the handsome, young-looking Nicholai. As if their differences aren’t enough, the acute grief over the loss of loved ones keeps her heart guarded. He may be her fantasy, but that’s all he can ever be.
To get past Juliette’s defenses and in order to keep her safe, Nicholai must prove himself worthy of her love and trust. Unbeknownst to the couple, her personal demons are not the only ones threatening their relationship. Hiding virtually unseen by the vampires, Demon Royalty plots to destroy not only the couple but the entire vampire breed. Luckily, Nicholai will do anything for Juliette—even if it means sacrificing himself.

Excerpt:

Julie’s gaze swept the landscape. The moon’s rays glittered on the snowy bows. The birch trees stood with their trunks painted white to match their limbs. Thick pine branches held fast under the weight of the new fallen snow, making them appear as if they wore white blankets made of virginal cotton about each limb. Sparkling mounds cluttered the ground between the trees, hiding the forest’s treasures beneath.
Save the sound of the hooves pounding on the ground, they journeyed through the silent night to a clearing in the trees. Nicholai clicked to his stallion, and with a flick of the reins, the steed increased into a rolling canter up a steep incline. Julie’s thighs pushed against the sides of the horse as she tried to match the new rhythm.
Nicholai’s breath warmed her ear when he spoke. “Not too much further. It’s right up ahead.”
“What’s up ahead?” Just as the words left Julie’s mouth, they crested over the ridge.
The frozen valley below took her breath away. A glaciate waterfall stood still as a statue against the rocky terrain. The cascading water, stopped as if by magic, reflected the moon’s soft rays and cast tiny prisms on the snow below.
Julie’s breath hitched in her throat. She took in the serene beauty of the land as they cruised at a slow trot. Debris rolled under Kedar’s hoofs. It created a hollow rattle in the night, barely audible to Juliette.
When they reached the valley, Nicholai pulled up the stallion and handed the reins to Julie. She patted the horse’s steaming neck as her lover dismounted with a fluid grace. He turned, grabbed Kedar’s reins, then reached up for Julie. Her thick coat seemed to melt as his strong hands clasped around her waist. She put her hands on his shoulders, and the bulge of muscle under his coat played under her fingers when he helped her down. A thrill went through her body.
Her breath frosted the air in a white plume. The lovers held each other, his hands about her waist, hers resting on his shoulders. Quiet as the moon above, they stared deeply into each other’s eyes. Nicholai captured her lips in a gentle caress that welcomed her to this special place.

Brenda Sparks has always loved all things spooky and enjoys incorporating paranormal elements in her writing. She refuses to allow pesky human constraints to get in the way of telling the story. Luckily the only thing limiting her stories is her imagination. Her characters are strong, courageous, and she adores spending time with them in their imaginary world.

Her idea of a perfect day is one spent in front of a computer with a hot cup of coffee, her fingers flying over the keys to send her characters off on their latest adventure.

Understanding the Culture of a Country, with Helen Dunn Frame

Understanding the Culture of a Country:
A Road Map to Happiness in Costa Rica or in any Foreign Country

“Adapted from the Third Edition of Retiring in Costa Rica or Doctors, Dogs and Pura Vida

Helen Dunn Frame

Top your “To Do List” of things to consider before you move or travel abroad with “Learn about the culture of the places you are considering.” It will pay dividends in a more successful adventure.

Increasingly important for all expats even more than avoiding “The Ugly American” label of the sixties is an acute awareness of the implications of our international interpersonal encounters. Our contemporary world remains polluted by cross-cultural misunderstandings, historical ethnic disdain, and various faux pas just as many rivers in Costa Rica reek of garbage. Today even casual travel requires personal and geopolitical responsibility.

Harkening back to my days in college, we learned in Sociology and Anthropology the definition of a culture encompassed shared values, practices, and rituals that permeate a society. While traditions pervade, different and unique individuals may occasionally in some fashion contradict dominant cultural traits or values thereby confusing the stranger trying to understand a group.

For Ticos, as Costa Ricans call themselves, decorum ranks of the utmost importance. Most natives will do everything possible to avoid confrontation. To cause a scandal, create a public commotion, or raise one’s voice in public definitely are unacceptable behaviors. At its most practical level, the appearance principle including personal hygiene means that you should warmly greet all Tico friends and acquaintances you happen to meet during your daily routines. Everyone should ask permission to enter a Tico home:  ”Con permiso.

When an expat speaks candidly it often creates a problem because Costa Ricans generally avoid conflict in all interpersonal encounters. People eagerly say untrue things because they feel the listener wants to hear a certain response. (Don’t forget expats lie too.) For example, a Tico will attempt to give directions without a clue about a destination’s location. A workman may agree to arrive at 8 a.m. because you wanted him there at that time although he had another job and couldn’t come until noon.

If invited to a Tico function, inquire about the proper attire. "Tico time," the tendency of many Costa Ricans to show up late or not at all to meetings, appointments and other commitments often causes expats frustrations. However, it’s a generalization. Not all Ticos arrive late or don’t call if they can’t come.

Don’t forget to consider the theory of event versus appointment. When you invite a Tico to dinner, he may show up two hours late because he thinks of it as an event, not a time specific invitation. More and more I find that Costa Ricans that deal regularly with foreigners have adapted themselves to expat ways. I have service people who come when they say they will and arrive promptly … or call.

Costa Ricans experience time in abundance, like a delightful climate, beautiful children, and a spectacular countryside. It results in a moment becoming an end rather than a means.

By European or North American standards Costa Rica has been ranked as a third world country although it has graduated to an emerging country. While the cost of living climbs, lower income citizens permeate the society. Yet you only have to go to one of the modern malls like Multiplaza Oeste to realize a solid Costa Rican middle class exists and many Costa Ricans claim considerable assets but they don’t boast about them. Many locals believe that all foreigners are wealthy regardless of the truth. Just by the number of things in a home, or the ability to dine out at will, or to have money in hand without working feeds the myth.

Learning facts about the culture you are interested in will put you head and shoulders above those who don’t. Speaking Spanish even if not perfectly will reap rewards. Pura Vida!

Helen Dunn Frame, formerly a commercial real estate broker in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex specializing in retail and restaurants, developed professional writing skills beyond those she learned in college. Plus, living in England, Germany, and Costa Rica; and her love of travel (in 50 countries where she gained an appreciation of the value of diverse cultures) have provided background information for several books.
Helen wove many threads of her experiences into the fabric of GREEK GHOSTS followed by the second in the mystery series, WETUMPKA WIDOW. Living in Dallas during a major scandal inspired SECRETS BEHIND THE BIG PENCIL. In a third edition this year, Helen advises Baby Boomers in her book RETIRING IN COSTA RICA or Doctors, Dogs and Pura Vida. It features a new chapter, Retirement 101, Planning Beyond Financial Security, which is also available as a booklet on Kindle.
A graduate of Syracuse University (Journalism School), and New York University (Master’s Degree in Sociology/Anthropology), major newspapers and magazines as well as trade publications in the United States, Costa Rica, England, and Germany have published her articles. She has edited newsletters, a newspaper, and other author's books, created business proposals for clients, and spoken to groups.

Western Author Melody Groves

This week’s featured artist is Melody Groves. Melody loves cowboys, gunslingers, and everything Western. She is the award-winning author of both fiction and nonfiction. Her latest is She Was Sheriff, which sounds great!

“All She Wanted Was a Gold Band-
What She Got Was a Tin Star”

For as long as she could remember, Maud Overstreet figured she’d grow up, get married, have a house with a white picket fence and a brood of kids. Now, in 1872, she’s tired of being the bank president’s spinster daughter and equally tired of washing, ironing and cleaning. When, out of the blue, Dry Creek’s town council offers her the job of replacement sheriff, she accepts. And her sheltered world explodes.

For the first time, Maud enters a saloon, tastes whiskey, learns to shoot, learns to ride a horse and drive a stagecoach, arrests people, and leads men in search parties. Yet she still has time to dream about her long-errant boyfriend, Elijah J. Goodman, off—somewhere—for the past few years. She is convinced they will marry when he returns and hopes it will be soon. But the discovery of gold brings all sorts of unsavory characters to her town, including the threat of the notorious James Mooney Gang. There are rumors of an impending bank robbery. Maud enlists the help of Mayor Seth Critoli, but it’s up to her to save Dry Creek from disaster.

“A light-hearted look at a woman who gets a job nobody else wants and makes it her own. Maud is a spunky, likeable heroine who comes into her own . . . as the town’s protector of law and order.” — Anne Hillerman, NY Times Bestselling Author

“A well-written thoroughly entertaining romp through the Gold Rush country with a reluctant officer of the law who discovers an aptitude for a job most thought only a man could do.”
— Chris Enss, NY Times Bestselling Author

Doesn’t that sound like a good gift for Mother’s Day?

Melody is also the author of the four Colton Brothers Saga (Border Ambush, Sonoran Rage, Arizona War and Kansas Bleeds). Here’s some info about the first one:

Robbed and beaten by outlaws, stagecoach guard James Colton vows justice and recovery of his grandfather’s watch. Determined to find his heirloom, James hunts the outlaws, only to face an immoral sheriff who gives him no choice but to shoot.

“The action never flags, and Groves has surely found her true calling...her cast of characters, their habits and idiosyncrasies is distinctly rich and right-on. A rip-snorting adventure yarn.” —Albuquerque Journal review

Melody brings her talents and interest in the Southwest to non-fiction titles as well – Hoist a Cold One! Historical Bars of the Southwest; Butterfield Byways; and Ropes, Reins and Rawhide.
